Provincial Record for UCSC’s Ken Stairs On Day 3 of the Alberta Age Group Championships. Ken Stairs of the University of Calgary Swim Club added a provincial record to his haul for the weekend setting a new provincial mark in the 10 & under 50 metre’s breastroke. His 39.31 beats Matthew Verway of the Red Deer Catalina Swim Club time of 40.05. Ken also went on to add two other wins to bring his total to 6 for the weekend. He added the 100 m free and the 200 m IM to the win and record in the 50 m breaststroke on Day 3.

James Kendrick of the Cascade Swim Club in Calgary won a total of seven events during the three day meet capturing gold on Day 3 ion the 100 m free and the 50 m backstroke. These two gold medals added to his wins in the 200 free, 50 & 200 m backstroke and the 100 IM for his total of seven. Edmonton Keyano’s Tsue Andersen added two more freestyle wins to sweep the sprint and middle distance freestyle categories. She finished day three having won 5 individual events: 50 m, 100 m, 200 m & 400 m freestyle and the 100 IM. Hot on her heals was teammate Saskia McLean who set provincial records on Day 2 adding wins in the 100 m free and the 50 m backstroke for the 11 & 12 girls.

In team standings congratulations go out to the Cascade Swim Club of Calgary who won the overall team title with a score of 3,930.5, just ahead of the University of Calgary Swim Club with 3,581. top ten team rankings from the weekend:

oscnag_t.jpg (8579 bytes)One of the most exciting races of the night was a time trial for the 11-12 girls to set the National Age Group record for the 400 medley relay. Not only did they break the record, they destroyed it by over 2 seconds! The Olympian Swim Club team of Madison Mills, Kristan Kushlyk, Lori Kremer and Natasha Fung all swam best splits to lower the mark to 4:38.25. Congratulations!

Day 2 Alberta Age Group Championship

Edmonton’s Saskia McLean Breaks Two Provincial Records. Saskia McLean of the Edmonton Keyano Swim Club broke two provincial records on day 2 breaking the girls 11 & 12 100 meter backstroke record in a time of 1:06.78 eclipsing the previous mark set by Cascade Swim Clubs Brittany Ozar (1:07.50) in 2003. Her second record, 11-12 50 Free, breaks one of Alberta’s oldest; set back in 1982, her time of 27.60 beats Rhonda Mayes 27.67.

In Relay action the Olympian Swim Club’s 11 & 12 Girls breaks the 4 x 50 Medley Relay formerly held by Edmonton Keyano Swim Club. Madison Mills, Kristan Kushlyk, Lori Kremer and Natasha Fung broke the previous mark by almost 2 seconds going 2:08.83 in the final. This record was set back in 1983 by Keyano with a time of 2:10.33.

These record swims were followed up with a few near misses as UCSC’s Ken Stairs won the 10 & Under 200 Free (2:24.81) just narrowly missing three time Olympic Medalist Curtis Myden’s provincial record of 2:24.13. He also picked up his second win of the night in the 200 breaststroke for 10 & Under boys going 3:30.07 and his third in the 100 back. Madison Mills of the Olympians followed up the relay record with a win in the 11 & 12 Girls 200 Free with a time of 2:10.98 just 3 tenths of a second off the provincial record set back in 1991. This is the fourth gold medal of the meet for Madison as she looks to qualify for the 2006 Team Alberta Tour Team.

Olympian’s Lori Kremer picked up here second and third wins of the weekend winning the 11 & 12 girls 50 metre butterfly in 31.01 and the 400 IM. Other multiple winners include: Karl Wolk EKSC 50 butterfly, 100 back, 200 IM; James Kendrick CASC 200 free, 200 back 100 IM; Thomas Jobin CASC 400 IM, 200 fly, 50 fly; Tsue Andersen EKSC 50 free, 200 free, 100 IM.

Competition continues Sunday at the Talisman Centre.
