Part of growing older is taking good care of yourself so you can enjoy a long and healthy life. A building is no different. Right now, a major focus for Talisman Centre is renewing the facility so that we can continue to play a vital and vibrant role in sport and wellness in Calgary.

Look over our Frequently Asked Questions below (and our Group Fitness FAQ) to get a better idea about what we'll be doing in 2010, and how it will affect you.

A New Roof (and more!) in 2010

As you may have heard, we're getting a new roof in 2010, but don't worry: it's business as usual until then! In the meantime, we have tried to anticipate any question you might have about Talisman Centre's facility enhancement project. If your question is not answered below, please contact us, and we'll be happy to answer your question. If you have a specific or technical question related to the new roof, facility enhancement, or construction process, please contact the City of Calgary by dialing 3-1-1 or emailing 3-1-1ContactUs@calgary.ca , where representatives will be pleased to answer your inquiry.
  • Give me the basics - what do I need to know?
    1) The tented portion of Talisman Centre (the main building) is closing in 2010 in order to have its roof replaced, along with other enhancements. The aquatic side will close December 31st, 2009, and the dryland side will close on February 28, 2010.

    2) The two annex buildings adjacent to Talisman Centre will continue to operate, (including a pool, fitness centre, two gyms, etc.) and your membership will remain valid during this time. There will be no public drop-in after 3:00PM every day; only Talisman Centre members will be permitted to enter the facility during this time.

    3) Due to the construction and closure, the size of our facility (and also our parking lot) will be substantially reduced, and we will be unable to offer certain programs and services during 2010.

    4) Members have three options:
              a. Continue to use the facility during 2010.
              b. Suspend your membership (and payments), and then resume your membership when we reopen in 2011, locking in 2009 prices for the duration of that year.
              c. Cancel, and get a pro-rated refund on the remainder of your membership.

Please note: We will be unable to use any of the gyms or pools that are currently found under the tented portion of Talisman Centre for most of 2010. The space that will be available must be shared by members, the public, and Talisman Centre’s Sport Partners. To mitigate this strain, there will be no drop-ins between 4:30 and 7:30pm Monday through Thursday for the duration of the construction project. Back to questions.
  • What spaces will be available in the annex buildings during 2010?
    Aquatics - Calgary Foundation Aquaplex
    • 1 Customer Service Desk Entrance
    • 50m pool – will be allocated as 2 x 25m pools
    • 20 person hot tub
    • Access to the pool deck
    • Wheelchair access to the pool deck will be via an alternate accessible entrance
    • Foundation Lounge area (converted to locker rooms, and the new Customer Service Desk).

Dryland - Dr. Neville Lindsay Sport Wellness Building
    • Temporary entrance with vestibule
    • 1 Customer Service Desk
    • Fitness Centre
    • Gyms 4 & 5
    • Locker rooms
    • LifeMark Health and The Cardiac Wellness Institute will continue to operate
    Back to questions.
  • What is the 2010 rollout schedule?
We anticipate that the 2010 facility enhancement project will take from January 1st, 2010, until December 31st, 2010. The aquatic side of the main building will close on December 31st, 2009, and the dryland portion will close at the end of February, 2010. The following programs and services will be ending in preparation for construction and the reduction of space:
    Ended June 2009
    • Preschool for Active Living
    • Campus Calgary
    • School Swim lessons

    Ending December 2009
    • Aquatic Group Fitness classes will be reduced and times altered from the current schedule
    • Executive Locker Service ending in January, 2010
    • Registered Programs including:
      • Badminton
      • Kids Triathlon
      • Kickboxing

      • I Can Swim program for children and youth
      • I Can Swim private and semi-private lessons
      • Adult Aquatic Programs
      • All I Can Swim Sport Modules

    Ending February 2010
    • Childcare
    • Dryland Group Fitness classes will be reduced and times altered from the current schedule
    • Sport & Conditioning for large sport groups will be limited
    • Café Santé and Jugo Juice

    Back to questions.
  • What Programs and Services will be running in 2010?
During 2010 a limited number of programs and services will be offered that can be best accommodated in the space remaining open. (This list is subject to change depending on final space allocation details):
    • ETS
    • Triathlon
    • Personal Training
    • Group Fitness (reduced schedule - see separate Group Fitness FAQ for more info)
    • Schools Groups (when space is available for rent)
    • Summer Daycamps
    • Nutrition Services (available on a contract basis)

Also, please note: We will be unable to use any of the gyms or pools that are currently found under the tented portion of Talisman Centre for most of 2010. The space that will be available must be shared by members, the public, and Talisman Centre’s Sport Partners. To mitigate this strain, there will be no drop-ins between 4:30 and 7:30pm Monday through Thursday for the duration of the construction project. Back to questions.
  • What will the layout of the Cardio and Weight Training Area look like in 2010?
The cardio/weight training equipment area will be located in the air conditioned lower level of the Dr. Neville Lindsay Sport Wellness Building for 2010. We’re still finalizing the layout of the area, but it will include cardio equipment, a free-weight area and a stretching area, as well as a mix of hammer strength and life fitness machines. Back to questions.
  • Where will I be able to train with my personal trainer?
Personal Training will take place in what is currently the accounting office. In order to make this transition as seamless as possible for Personal Training clients, we will begin the move gradually at the end of August or beginning of September, 2009. The move will be complete, and the new area will be ready for use by the end of September. Here are a few reasons to be excited about this change:
    • The 2010 space for Personal Training is bigger in terms of square footage than the current Personal Training space
    • The 2010 space is substantially more quiet than the current space
    • The 2010 space is also more private, and will be inaccessible to others during Personal Training sessions.
    Back to questions.
  • How many parking spots will there be?
Due to the large laydown for the construction trailers, cranes and other equipment, Talisman Centre’s parking lot will be reduced to between 170 and 200 parking stalls onsite. Of course, we are across Macleod Trail from the Erlton C-Train station, and the #10 bus stops near the entrance to our parking lot. The #3 bus stops on 4th street, which is a short walk from Talisman Centre through Lindsay Park. See map below:

(Note: The part of the map designated “Construction Laydown Area” is an approximation and is subject to change. It should not be regarded as definitive.)

    Back to questions.
  • Where will my ETS & Tri Club classes be held for biking and running?
These classes will be held in the cardio mezzanine, which can currently be reached via the stairs located in the Fitness Centre. In 2010, entrance to this area will be through Gym 4. Back to questions.
  • What Group Fitness Classes will be running in 2010?
Check out the drop-in schedule page to see all the classes currently on offer! Back to questions.
  • Where will the showers and change rooms be?
There will be change rooms and showers during 2010, on both the Aquatic and Dryland sides of Talisman Centre, although there will not be an Executive Locker Room during this time. On the dryland side, locker rooms and showers will be located where the executive locker room is currently located. On the aquatic side, the locker rooms will be where the Foundation Lounge currently is, and showers will be built on the pool deck. Back to questions.
  • What is happening between Jan 1 - Feb 28 that is causing the aquatic side to be closed, but not the Dryland side?
The pools in the Aquatics portion of the facility require more preparation in order to get them ready for the construction project to begin. Not only do the pools need to be drained, but the complex mechanical apparatuses that feed the pools, filter the water, and regulate its temperature must be thoroughly checked and brought safely offline.

    12. Will it be business as usual up until February? Or will you need to move equipment before then?
You’ll be able to use all the machines you’re used to, but they may be in a different location than you’re used to. We want to make these transitions as seamless as possible, so we will begin to position equipment in their 2010 locations prior to the closure of the main tented building. We will always leave a sign alerting you to where a particular piece of equipment has been moved, so you’ll always be able to find your machines!

A reduced Group Fitness class schedule will go into effect in mid-February, and will continue through 2010. Back to questions.
  • Will membership and programs be discounted during 2010?
We considered a number of different scenarios and options regarding membership prices in 2010. After much discussion, it was felt that we were still offering a good value for the membership dollar compared with other facilities in the city, particularly in and around the core. We understand that some customers will disagree, and this is why we’ve provided three options for members for 2010.
    1. Continue to use the facility. The two annex buildings of Talisman Centre will be open, and your membership will still be valid through 2010. We'd love to have you!
    2. Alternatively, members who wish to do so may “freeze” their membership, and then “un-freeze” the membership when Talisman Centre's main building re-opens in 2011. With this option, the 2009 rates will be “locked-in” for the duration of 2011.
    3. If a customer feels that they will not be able to use Talisman Centre's two annex buildings during the facility enhancement, they can opt for a refund or a pro-rated membership that will last until the facility closes in 2010.

To help in your decision, you should know that we do not anticipate that we will have the same number of people trying to access the same services as we do currently. In fact, we are estimating that with 50% reduction in our building’s footprint, we will have a 50% reduction in the number of people actively using the facility. In addition, we are implementing a policy in 2010 that only members will be permitted to enter the facility between 4:30 and 7:30pm Monday through Thursday for the duration of the construction project.. (In other words, there will be no public drop-in available during those times.)

For those members who do opt to leave, we are more than happy to recommend a facility that might better meet their needs in 2010, and hope they will return to us in 2011. But we also hope that many people will be able to continue to use our facility as they always have, through 2010 and beyond.

We encourage all our members to speak with a Customer Service Representative about their membership options in 2010. Back to questions.
  • Will there be any public swim time, with only one 50M pool?
We will continue to have a pool available in 2010, so our swimmers are welcome to stay. The Water Polo teams, Synchronized Swimmers, Competitive Swimmers, and other Sport Partners will be sharing that pool with the public, and they too will have much more restricted access than they enjoy today in order to allow sufficient space for the public. (For example, there will be no special events until we fully re-open in 2011.) We remain committed to providing space for the public to swim, and are currently working to determine the 2010 schedules. These schedules are in their final planning stages, and should be ready early this fall. At the moment we know that we will most likely operate the pool in the annex building as two 25-metre pools, rather than as one 50-metre pool, in order to better allocate space for the public, while still having space available for Sport Partners and other groups to train. There will be some hours in the day that we will not be able to offer guaranteed public lane swim as we do currently. Back to questions.
  • Will the Partner Exchange Program be in effect during 2010?
Unfortunately, we are unable to offer Partner Exchange in 2010. Other facilities are operating at capacity, and will be unable to accommodate the additional load. Back to questions.

Group Fitness in 2010

For general details on the 2010 Facility Enhancement project, and how it may affect you, please consult our main 2010 FAQ.

  • How did you determine which classes would remain, and which ones would be on hiatus for 2010?
A number of factors were carefully considered in order to create a schedule for 2010. We will be unable to use any of the gyms or pools that are currently found under the tented portion of Talisman Centre for most of 2010. The space that will be available must be shared by members, the public, and Talisman Centre’s Sport Partners. (To mitigate this strain, there will be no drop-ins between 4:30 and 7:30pm Monday through Thursday for the duration of the construction project.) In addition, the available parking lot space will be significantly reduced, and the childcare services that many of our group fitness participants rely on will not be offered in 2010. Since our facility will not be able to accommodate the same number of customers as we currently do, we have adjusted our schedule accordingly, so that the customers will continue to enjoy the best possible experience at Talisman Centre through 2010. Back to questions.
  • When will the schedule change for the Aquatics classes?
The 2010 aquatics schedule will take effect on January 1st, 2010. Back to questions.
  • When will the schedule change for the Dryland classes?
The 2010 dryland schedule will take effect in February, 2010. Further details will be published when they are available. Back to questions.
  • What is the Group Fitness Schedule for 2010?
Please see the schedule below. (Note: The white space in this schedule indicates that the time is reserved by one of Talisman Centre’s Sport Partners or other User Groups. This schedule displays all the classes that will be running in 2010.)
    Back to questions.
  • Will the classes that are on hiatus in 2010 return in 2011?
It is our intention to return as many existing classes as possible when the main tented portion of Talisman Centre re-opens in 2011. We will not have exact details or scheduling information until we are closer to that grand re-opening date. Back to questions.
  • Where can I take a Ripped class in the city?
We understand the popularity of our Ripped classes and the passion of its attendees. As mentioned in the previous question, Talisman Centre is simply unable to accommodate those classes with the space we’ll have available in 2010. However, we are pleased to inform you that we are working in conjunction with Ripped founder Jari Love and her husband and business partner Ray Love, to help our customers transition to either one of their Fitness Plus locations in the city where you may continue to get the Ripped experience in 2010.
    North Location:
    1709 8th Avenue NE
    Calgary, AB T2E 0S9

    Monday-Friday: 6am - 10pm
    Saturday & Sunday: 9am - 5pm

Membership details, fees, schedules or other information on “Get Ripped” at Fitness Plus will be released in the fall. Over the next two months, Fitness Plus and Talisman Centre will be conducting a survey to determine what the best times are for classes. Check Talisman Centre’s Drop-in Schedule webpage for the survey link. Back to questions.
  • Where will the Talisman Centre Group Fitness classes be located in 2010?
In 2010, Talisman Centre will be operating our two annex buildings, which include two gyms, two 25 metre pools, and office space. The bulk of group fitness classes will be held in one of the two gymnasiums for dryland classes, and in the pool for our aquatic group fitness classes. Exact location information for each class will be published soon. Back to questions.
  • When will I know who is teaching the classes in 2010?
The experience providers at Talisman Centre will be working with our current instructors over the coming weeks and months in order to determine the teaching schedules for 2010. As soon as we have a better idea of who will be teaching classes, we will update this document. Back to questions.

Childcare in 2010

For general details on the 2010 Facility Enhancement project, and how it may affect you, please consult our main 2010 FAQ.

  • When will Childcare be ending?
The last day of operation for Childcare will be Monday, February 15th, 2010. This will allow for the conversion of the childcare area to office space prior to the closure of the dryland portion of the main building scheduled for February 28th, 2010.

Background: We are anticipating that the Facility Enhancement Project will take from January 1st, 2010 until December 31, 2010. As of December 31st, 2009, the aquatic portion of Talisman Centre’s main building will be closed in preparation for the construction phase of the Facility Enhancement project. The dryland portion of the main structure will remain open until February 28th, 2010, including gyms 1, 2 and 3, the main track and our locker rooms. After February 28th, the dryland portion will close, and the annexes alone will remain open. There will be no Executive Locker Service available after January, 2010. The Café Santé operations will be suspended for 2010 as well. Back to questions.
  • Will Childcare start back up after the enhancement project?
Yes, our intention is to resume Childcare services in the first quarter of 2011. Back to questions.
  • Where can my children go when I work out?
We are happy to direct parents to Childcare services in the area, but Talisman Centre is unable to offer Childcare in 2010. A partial list of Childcare options in the area will be provided upon request. Back to questions.
  • Can’t you move Childcare and run it in another location?
We thoroughly evaluated all possible options and scenarios that would allow Childcare to continue through construction. Unfortunately, there are no cost-effective options that would allow this to happen. Back to questions.
  • How are you going to get your great Childcare employees back in 2011?
We love our staff, and we don’t want them to go far! Human Resources may be redeploying Childcare staff elsewhere in the facility during the construction phase of our facility enhancement project, which could mean they may not leave at all. Childcare will resume in the year following construction, and we will do everything in our power to get our team back. We are actively working with our Human Resources department to ensure that sufficient incentive and retention strategies are in place such that our excellent people will return as soon as Childcare resumes. Back to questions.
  • What spaces will be available in the annex buildings during 2010?
    Aquatics - Calgary Foundation Aquaplex
    • 1 Customer Service Desk Entrance
    • 50m pool – will be allocated as 2 x 25m pools
    • 20 person hot tub
    • Access to the pool deck
    • Wheelchair access to the pool deck will be via an alternate accessible entrance
    • Foundation Lounge area (converted to locker rooms, and the new Customer Service Desk).

Dryland - Dr. Neville Lindsay Sport Wellness Building
    • Temporary entrance with vestibule
    • 1 Customer Service Desk
    • Fitness Centre
    • Gyms 4 & 5
    • Locker rooms
    • LifeMark Health and The Cardiac Wellness Institute will continue to operate
    Back to questions.
  • What Programs and Services will be running in 2010?
During 2010 a limited number of programs and services will be offered that can be best accommodated in the space remaining open. (This list is subject to change depending on final space allocation details):
    • ETS
    • Triathlon
    • Personal Training
    • Group Fitness (reduced schedule)
    • Schools Groups (when space is available for rent)
    • Summer Daycamps
    • Nutrition Services (available on a contract basis)
    Back to questions.
  • What happens to the Childcare passes I’ve purchased?
Childcare passes will remain valid. They can be used until Childcare ends on February 15th, 2010, and will remain valid when Childcare starts up again after construction is complete. We will offer full refunds on any unused Childcare cards to any participants who wish to return them. Back to questions.

  • What will the classes look like in 2011?
We are currently planning the classes and times for 2011. With the facility reopening on January 1, 2011, our intention is to phase programs that will be on a hiatus back into the building between January 1 - September 30, 2010. Programs remaining in 2010 will undergo a space change as we come out of construction and back into operation in 2011. This plan will be communicated to customers in late 2010 as construction comes to a close. Back to questions.

    Back to questions.
  • What equipment will be in the fitness centre in 2010?
Most of the equipment you now enjoy at Talisman Centre will remain accessible in the Fitness Centre through 2010. Please refer to the map below to view the equipment layout plan for 2010.
    Back to questions.
  • Will the cardio mezzanine be open in 2010?
The cardio mezzanine will not be open to the public. That space will be used for ETS and Tri Club classes in 2010. Back to questions.
  • What will be in the profile room in 2010?
The profile room will be used to host group fitness classes in 2010. During times when there are no group fitness classes scheduled, the Profile room may be used by the public as a free-weights area. Back to questions.
  • What changes will take place prior to February 28, 2010 in the Fitness Centre? Where will the Fitness Centre desk be in 2010?
On November 23rd, 2009, the Fitness Centre desk was relocated from its current location to the area next to gym #3, adjacent to the “waterfall wall”. (This is in the upper weight training area, just before the stairs leading down to the Fitness Centre.) The desk will remain in this location throughout 2010. To accommodate this move, some equipment displaced by the new Fitness Centre desk location was redistributed throughout the Fitness Centre in the week leading up to November 23rd. Back to questions.
  • Will there be an Olympic Platform in 2010?
Due to space constraints, we will no longer be able to offer an Olympic Platform to our members. We regret any inconvenience this may cause. Back to questions.
  • Will memberships be discounted?
We considered a number of different scenarios and options regarding membership prices in 2010. After much discussion, it was felt that we were still offering a good value for the membership dollar compared with other facilities in the city, particularly in and around the core. We understand that some customers will disagree, and this is why we’ve provided three options for members for 2010.
    1. 1. Continue to use the facility. The two annex buildings of Talisman Centre will be open, and your membership will still be valid through 2010. We'd love to have you!
    2. 2. Alternatively, members who wish to do so may suspend their membership, and then resume the membership when Talisman Centre's main building re-opens in 2011. With this option, the 2009 rates will be “locked-in” for the duration of 2011.

Membership in 2010

For general details on the 2010 Facility Enhancement project, and how it may affect you, please consult our main 2010 FAQ.

  • What will happen to my annual or continuous membership during the renovations?
    a. Continue to use the facility! The two annex buildings of Talisman Centre will be open, and your membership will still be valid through 2010. We'd love to have you!

    b. Alternatively, members who wish to do so may suspend their membership (and payments), and then re-activate the membership when Talisman Centre's main building re-opens in 2011. With this option, the 2009 rates will be “locked-in” for the duration of 2011. Come to the Customer Service Desk to fill out a membership suspension form.

    c. You can cancel your membership for a pro-rated refund. Back to questions.
  • What is the difference between canceling my membership and suspending my membership?
If you choose to cancel your membership you will not be eligible for the 2009 prices when we re-launch in 2011. If you choose to suspend your membership you are doing so with the intent to come back when we re-launch in 2011. By choosing the suspension option you are also locking in to the 2009 prices for the remainder of 2011. Back to questions.
  • If I choose to suspend my membership, what is the process to reactivate it?
In late 2010 we will contact you to let you know when you are eligible to re-activate your membership. You will have two months after we reopen in which to notify us if you want your membership reactivated. (At this time you will provide us with your banking information to process the reactivation.) Back to questions.
  • What if I don’t get back to you within that two month period?
If you don’t notify us when you want to reactivate your membership before the two-month time period is up, you will no longer be eligible for the 2009 prices. Back to questions.
  • How long will I receive the 2009 prices?
2009 prices will only be available until the end of 2011. Any price increases will be effective January 1st, 2012. Back to questions.
  • If I cancel my membership or do not reactivate within the time limit provided, will my membership price increase if I choose to return?
Yes, only those that continue to use their membership or suspend and then reactivate their membership within the time period provided will receive 2009 prices for the duration of 2011. Back to questions.
  • What if I have a 1-month membership, 4-month membership, or 10-card pass?
These two membership options will only be available for sale until December 31st, 2009. If you have a current 4-month prepaid membership and wish to cancel at the time of renovations you may do so and receive a pro-rated refund. 10-Card pass holders will be able to use their passes during our facility renovations in 2010, but will be unable to purchase new 10-card passes.

Also note: We will be unable to use any of the gyms or pools that are currently found under the tented portion of Talisman Centre for most of 2010. The space that will be available must be shared by members, the public, and Talisman Centre’s Sport Partners. To mitigate this strain, there will be no drop-ins between 4:30 and 7:30pm Monday through Thursday for the duration of the construction project. Back to questions.

Workplace Wellness in 2010

For general details on the 2010 Facility Enhancement project, and how it may affect you, please consult our main 2010 FAQ.

  • Can I book boardrooms or team-building events in 2010?
Due to space restrictions at Talisman Centre during 2010, we are unable to offer boardroom rentals or team-building events to our Corporate customers. It is our intention to resume offering these programs in 2011, as soon as our construction project is complete. Back to questions.
  • If I buy a corporate membership now what will change in 2010?
Although the main building will be closed, the two annex buildings containing two gyms, cardio and weight training areas, and a pool, will remain open. Your corporate rate will be honoured, and you will be free to use the facility as a member during 2010. Please note that in 2010 there will be no public drop-in admissions sold between 4:30 and 7:30pm Monday through Thursday. Corporate members would not be affected by this policy. Back to questions.
  • Will there be any benefit for me joining now vs 2011?
In addition to the advantages listed above, buying a membership now will lock-in the 2009 membership rate through to 2011. Persons waiting to join or re-join Talisman Centre in 2011 will be subject to any rate increases. Back to questions.
  • Will my bulk of block tickets work in 2010? Can I get a credit for difference not used?
The block tickets will remain valid through 2010, although there will be no drop-in admission for non-members between 4:30 and 7:30pm Monday through Thursday. We are unable to offer credit for the difference on unused tickets, but they will remain valid after we fully reopen in 2011 as well. Back to questions.
  • When and how will shower facilities and parking availability change?
During 2010, showers and change rooms will be available to everyone. These will be in place by early 2010. Onsite parking will be reduced by a few hundred spaces in order to accommodate construction equipment. Back to questions.
  • Will you still have corporate membership discounts in 2011?
We value our corporate clients, and we want them to stay with us in 2010! If that isn’t possible, we want them to come back to us in 2011. To that end, we will continue to offer discounts to corporate members when we fully reopen in 2011. Back to questions.
